WORTHIS shoes
published on 11th August, 2010

The oldest pair of shoes I own were originally my grandmother’s. They are camel in colour, lined with wool and have no-nonsense stitching all the way ’round. Honestly, these things have been going for 50 years and are staying together better than the shit bricks I bought last week. My grandmother was Ukrainian. She was short, stout and angry. I often wonder what she was so angry about and perhaps it was disappointment. Disappointment that in the increasing level of crapness going on around her, these shoes seemed the last of what was good. Of what was hand made. And of what was made with care and in turn would be worn with care.

WORTHIS shoes buck the crap trend completely. Each pair of WORTHIS shoes is handmade. Each shoe passes through 160 separate processes, from cutting the calfskin to hand stitching. Moccasins and boots are available in black or camel and are constructed entirely of leather. They are a product of diminishing craft practices placed in a modern context. As a short, stout, angry young Ukrainian woman I am so happy to see shoes like this being made. And Maria Topilnicki would be very proud.
