Bitch Prefect, ‘Live at Deadshits Motel’
published on 22nd December, 2010

I can say with about 80% certainty that the Deadshits Motel is not a real motel. I certainly wouldn’t stay there. Who would call their place of business that? It seems like a ‘festival’ for lo-fi pop bands that was staged in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley in early November. Adelaide’s own scuzzy heroes, Bitch Prefect were there, representing our fair state with some aplomb.

This set is available for free download at Brendan Earle’s blog, seeing as Earles is the guy who recorded all the bands. His bio makes him sound like an older, indier Spoz. He did a fine job; stick in some earbuds and close your eyes and you too could be at the Deadshits Motel! But look out for the beautifully presented tape, courtesy of our friend Staci Wilson of Faux Friends.

The music is amazing, classic Clean-style pop coated in a noisy sheen. Bitch Prefect are hugely indebted to Flying Nun Records, simple boy-meets-girl melodies and DIY ethos. The recording only exacerbates those characteristics further, mixing it with idle chatter and the odd bit of aimless strumming. But the noise isn’t a shelter to hide from proper scrutiny. Play the tape, suck on a Pale Ale, and soak it in.
