If you’re reading Five Thousand, chances are you probably like to think of yourself as ‘urbane’ and a little bit, er, cultured. If you’ve been paid this week and you have a gift to purchase, I imagine you might like to head to Urban Cow. Urban Cow is the retail hub of our humble town’s creativity – selling affordable, locally made jewellery, glass, ceramics, t-shirts, and art. The famous Heaps Good shirts are just the tip of the iceberg.
In addition to housing the perfect gift for your creativity conscious friend, Urban Cow also has a gallery. April’s show – Animorphos – features six of those cool kids I’ve always been jealous of at art school.

Kate Gagliardi’s paintings are nearly always sold out on opening night, and I’ve been eyeing off Claudia Desse-Linder’s prickly jewellery ranges for some time now. If you like your visual trickery, Madeline Reece paints perfect replicas of Polaroids. So perfect that at her last show most people thought they were just rip offs of some hipster’s Tumblr. Steph English has a studio space next to mine at school, and after watching her fiddle with fabric dye, tree branches and delicate cloth for the last few weeks; I am eagerly awaiting the results. I don’t foresee my jealousy subsiding anytime soon.
