Andrew Long, ‘Graceful Exits’
published on 31st August, 2009

Photographer and 22-year-old creative prodigy Andrew Long has taken a graceful exit from past work to indulge in a more surreal aesthetics. Skateboarders, drunk dudes, juxtaposing flora and South Australian suburbia create the foundation of Graceful Exits, which jumps from black and white photographs to zines to video.

Blurred portraits and close ups are a prevalent technique; Robotosaurus lead singer Isaac Rayson appears pixelated and passed out. Over the other side of the room, a seven seven minute video loop looks us strait in the eye. In this piece, the simple breathing, blinking and inimitable expressions of eyeballs highlight the intention of Andrew’s work – to show the simplest things as both beautiful and honest. This is highlighted in his zine, Ignorance is Piss, which features a narrative group of images the "see the beauty in what you have, rather than looking for something better all the time."
