‘Painthing (as one)’
published on 12th April, 2010

In the past I have rabbited on about the quality of the 2010 AeAF program. ‘Painthing’ is a sparkly sequin in the AeAF line up for 2010. The huge list of artists alone will guarantee every Adelaide artkid and their scruffy companion of choice will attend the opening.

There are two things that make this show so exciting. First off, the choice to disprove the assumption that experimental art couldn’t possibly involve painting is gutsy and astute. The artists involved range from those largely recognised for their painting practice (for example Brigid Noone) to others better known for sculptural work (say, Anton Hart).

The second reason I’m all hot and bothered about this show is the choice to involve a huge range of local, interstate, emerging, mid-career, and established artists. This slams down rumours that the Adelaide art scene is inferior to the east coast’s, and equates up-and-coming artists with those already recognised. Thus curator Domenico de Clario has joined the dots in what he refers to as a ‘local constellation’ – linking up painting with experimentation, Adelaide with the rest of Australia, and us with artistes.
