Sandra Uray-Kennett + Kristel Britcher
published on 7th December, 2011

There are too many openings this week. The SASA graduate exhibitionsKat Botten, plus Tooth and Nail. Oh, and FELTspace is exhibiting too. Try not to drink too much at the openings, try to get up early enough to do some work before the next opening. First world problems – the Summer edition.

Opening at FELTspace this month are two solo shows, the first of which is wordily titled The Lexicon of Lycanthropy. Artist Sandra Uray-Kennett has been writing and making work about her experiences as a close witness to a loved one’s schizophrenia for several years now. Her practice has  developed – as many do these days – from a painting one into an object-based one. On a number of occasions Uray-Kennett has contributed to research into the experiences of people whose loved ones suffer from mental illness – she is a rare example of how the work of artists might contribute to research in other fields.

The second show will feature work by accomplished glass artist Kristel Britcher. Britcher is at the forefront of a small cluster of Adelaide glass artists working with the perceptual distortions of blown glass – its ability to magnify, warp, reflect and refract images. Present to us we are pulls further on this thread – presenting an unusual meeting of glass and installation practices.
