Beer & Brewer

Ah, Beer magazine. The place where geeky and blokey meet. And get drunk.

You can’t get much geekier than proudly proclaiming "191 beers inside". Other geeky topics in the Spring issue of this quarterly mag: ‘frontier’ (experimental or unusual) beers, Melbourne bar Biero’s patented ‘Beervault’, Italian craft beers, and a Melbournian sustainability consultant who caters events on a pushbike loaded with kegs of his own craft beer.

Still, Beer is blokey enough to see the humour in this. They’ve got tongue firmly in cheek ‘reporting’ on beer fests, home brewing, new beer reviews, independent brewer profiles, guest editorial by Chris Badenoch from MasterChef (including his ‘beeramisu’ recipe) and beer trivia. (Did you know the six-pack was invented because it was the ideal weight for the average housewife to carry home? Genius.)

Focusing on Aussie and Kiwi craft (boutique) beers, recurring features include best seller lists for independent bottle-os, and – my favorite feature – a map showing all the microbreweries in Australia and New Zealand – great for road trips. Label me ‘geek’.
