Benjamin Law, ‘The Family Law’
published on 1st June, 2010

Ordinarily, unless you are David Sedaris or a very close friend, I don’t want to hear about your family memories. Hearing about your family memories makes me say lame things like "here’s 30 cents, call someone who cares", even though public phones barely exist anymore, and that saying was never funny, even in the 90s.

But Benjamin Law’s family memories are awesome! His mum is hil-ar-i-ous and his siblings make horribly inappropriate jokes that elicit memories of the boredom-fueled, semi-maniacal times you shared with your own.

If you’ve read his stuff in Frankie, you know what you’re in for, because this collection of short pieces doesn’t stray far from his usual. But you don’t really want it to, because his usual is great. This is a quick read (I got through it in 2 days) but a satisfying one.

I’m not saying he’s David Sedaris, but I am saying that he can regale me with family memories any time he wants.
