In 2008 there was a place just off Hindley Street called Value King. It wasn’t your standard Hindley Street spot. They didn’t sell booze or drugs, there was very little gratuitous nudity and you didn’t go there to dance (although many an exhibition there turned into a party). The store and gallery was something special.

But things change. Value King closed its doors in late 2008 with a melancholic sigh. Fortunately, this didn’t last long. The demise of Value King was the beginning of CO OP, an online version of its former incarnation with virtual racks hanging with labels including For The Homies, Note to Self  and Schwipe plus a collection of great zines, books, cameras, and prints.

Earlier this year the CO OP crew opened a little pop-up shop in Ebeneezer Place which was a welcome return to the great store days. We can only hope CO OP manifests into another retail space sometime soon, but until then we’ll have to dance around the house whenever our packages arrive.
