Council Of Objects
published on 26th October, 2011

Suckers for inventive collective nouns will go weak at the knees over this bright and breezy store that has sprung up in what I like to call the ‘Parisian Quarter’ of the East End. (OK, so that’s a stretch at best. But stay with me). There’s something about the tree-lined boulevard and the red brick facade of the old markets that attracts a certain kind of retailer to these parts – ones that have a keen eye and a knack for being a step and a half ahead of us mere mortals. Hause and Pedal and Thread do it well.

Council of Objects is a welcome addition to the art and craft scene in Adelaide. Owner Elise knows her stuff – she’s an ex-Jam Factory gal – but don’t for a second think that all you’re going get here is fancy glass blowing and pricey ceramics. Elise has curated a gorgeous selection of mainly South Australian textiles, homewares and jewellery at a range of price points, including Nicholas Moran’s beautiful woodland animal brooches and artworks, Peta Kruger and Emily Green jewellery, Caren Ellis lamps and boxes and some very tempting Samantha Bosward candlesticks. Can’t make it in? Then buy online! If wood grain makes your heart race, laser-cut acrylics tickle your fancy, and clean, attractive, almost-Scandinavian-but-decidedly-more-Australian design has your eyelashes fluttering, then Council is going to prove a welcome addition not just to Grenfell Street, but your own home.
