With Viktor and Rolf’s ready-to-wear looking more like something you’d don in a parallel universe where it’s possible to wear architecturally sculpted cutout purple tulle without getting stuck in the elevator – (who am I kidding, they wouldn’t have elevators there, they’d float between streams of being in boats made of fairy floss and twine) – it’s kind of refreshing to find a label taking things towards the specific and fundamental characteristics of clothing design.

Slow and Steady Wins The Race is a bi-monthly clothing diary based in New York. In the spirit of the tortoise in the Aesop fable, S&SWTR yield a limited number of original pieces at a regulated pace throughout the calendar year. Their aim is the democratisation of clothing design in the midst of a world where fashion can be inaccessible and even wasteful.

Each issue is pared down to a single design element. Issue No. 1 began with an intimate look at seams, with No. 5 dedicated to pockets and No. 8 an exploration of the simple white shirt. The wedding dress and rainwear issues are coming soon! What I wouldn’t do for a pair of rainboots this festival season.
