Adabco Boutique Hotel

For a long time I was certain this hotel was called ‘Abracadabra Boutique Hotel’, and on arrival, I was expecting a complimentary magic show. As it turns out, I was horribly mistaken, however the lack of magic doesn’t equal lack of comfort. Skip the leather trimmings in the reception and downstairs lounge (but admire the crystalised ram head and gold-framed paintings) and head upstairs, where your spacious room or quiet communal balcony is the perfect place for a glass of wine or two before going out. From Wakefield Street, the CBD is accessible from every angle.

In the morning, take the front stairs instead of the lift – the early light filters beautifully through the gothic-style windows of the large stone building that was once a boys’ home. A continental breakfast is included with your stay, but we’d recommended heading out. Swing by the Central Markets and pick up some fresh bread, eggs and bacon to bring back to the kitchen (one on each floor!), or enjoy a walk to places like Au Matin Calme, Bliss and Big Table – they’re not too far away.
