Did you hear? It’s springtime! Sure, we’ve recently had weather moodier than a PHD student dropping coffee cold turkey, but spring has arrived, I swear. The birds know, the bees know, and the frisky young drunks on their pub crawls know too – pashing furtively beside the pokie machines, oblivious to everything except the texture of each other and that primal springtime urge to create wriggly, bright-eyed offspring.
Spring is also the perfect time for wholesome outdoor pursuits such as cycling and picnicking with your friends, lovers and those wriggly, bright-eyed offspring. Sure, hardcore pedal pushers will hit the hills any time of the year, sweating into microfibre jerseys on scorchers, or squinting through helmet-pummelling hailstones at oncoming traffic. But spring makes cycling a lovely, easy delight – a perfect time to grab your bike, buddies and a basket of sandwiches and meet at the balloons in Victoria Park* for the Bicycle Institute of SA (BISA)’s second annual Spring Ride.
With this ride, BISA hope to draw support for better cycling infrastructure. A family city ride, a picnic and ‘Slow Race’, bike polo and a speech by Lord Mayor (and general bike dude) Stephen Yarwood are all on the agenda. The air is crisp and mellow and the sky a clear, bright blue. There’s nothing better than a kiss of sun on your arms and pedalling legs… go on!
*Not Victoria Square. Victoria Park is the eastern one with the racetrack. Tricky, I know.
