The City to Bay Fun Run
published on 11th September, 2009

It’s high time we all realised that there’s more to youth than bleak dance music and baffling internet memes. Life isn’t all sordid warehouse parties and Adult Swim. Meaning, purpose, optimism, audacity‚ these should be the harbingers of youth. All this fashionable ennui should come later, when we’ve exhausted every alternative to the fact that we’ve inherited the store-bought, plain vanilla lives of our parents.

What we need is something wholesome. Something outside of the bounds of irony or fashion. What we need is something to remind us that we are young and vital; that there’s more to life than clever t-shirts and jokes about AIDS.

What we need is a fun run.

It’s 12 kilometres from the centre of Adelaide to the end of Jetty Road, which is just over a quarter of a standard marathon. Doable in under an hour, but no cakewalk either. What’s more, running twelve kilometres in an hour made me feel slightly better about wasting my salad days downloading the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie.

The City to Bay is over for another year, but next year I’d like to see every one of you listless hipsters sign up. Forget about the charity, do it for yourselves.
