Dog tank top

· Wednesday March 26, 2014

Being a dog of high sartorial taste it can be hard finding a well-tailored outfit. Throw into the equation the fact that I'm a whippet and things just get more difficult. Trying to find a simple top that can cater to my full chest is somewhat of a nightmare. On a day-to-day basis I am often left in the nude with nothing but a collar.

My humans thought it might be sweet to buy me a bumblebee outfit, but besides being completely impractical it puts me into the category of these uncivilised 'bee dogs'. So what is a whippet to do when all he really wants is an easy summer tank top? Make one – or, in my case, ask my humans to make me one. — Neato

You will need:
– Some stretchy cotton garments you're not averse to cutting up and sewing. We went with a tasteful pretty pink, baby blue combination. We also thought about using a Slayer t-shirt. You could use shop-bought fabric if you're some sort of millionaire.
– Scissors
– Pins
– A sewing machine (or needle and thread for the truly patient)
– A pattern from which to draw inspiration and adjust to your poochie's size. We used this one.

To cut out the four parts of the pattern, tenderly rub the t-shirt against your cheek and whisper a soft goodbye. Then pin each piece against a t-shirt folded in half (this way you can cut a symmetrical piece in one elegant pass). Now get cuttin'.

Now get sewin'.

For good, strong seams use a straight stitch followed by a zigzag stitch.

You'll be attaching the two front half pieces to the two back half pieces like so.

Now sew the completed front and back pieces together with the same stitching to create foreleg holes.

Maybe even get extra fancy and hem the tank top around the edges and inside the holes. Or don't – this is just some 'I'm with Stupid' t-shirt you're repurposing in a hilarious way, after all.

Look at this guy. Stylish and seasonally appropriate.
