Harajuku Gyoza

Say Irasshaimase to Harajuku Gyoza! Judging by the queues outside the restaurant since it opened earlier this week, you’ve probably already done so but just in case you’re wondering what-sabi all the excitement is about, here’s a quick welcome to SS11/12. Gyoza is Japanese perfected Chinese dumplings. Dumplings are the new sushi. Brunswick Street is the new Dumpling Row.

Enlisting respected local chef Ryan Squires from Esquire to help find the perfect formula, Harajuku Gyoza has been a dream career change finally come true for two local ex-Mad Men. Japanese sojourn complete, the team have now found the recipes to compliment their vibrant izakaya-style fit-out that nails the eccentric Harujuku vibe right down to a ‘T’ and a ‘P’. Yes they even have one of those toilets.

The food arrives hastily making it a top spot for quick lunches as well as dinner, but beware! As tempting as it will be to over-indulge, don’t gyoza overboard on those tasty grilled dumplings, crispy Karaage chicken or tender Agedashi tofu because the dessert dumplings may just be the surprise pick of the menu.

While we’re making comparisons, lets put it out there that Harajuku may even surpass the other offerings on Dumpling Row, if not for flavour then definitely for service and smiles. Judging by the hordes streaming in, it seems the kids agree too and Harujuku looks sure to be a locale for plenty ‘Hai’ times this summer.
