‘Know Your Product’
published on 4th October, 2011

How do you convince thousands of people to part with their hard-earned dollars for sets of knives that slice through leather shoes, and vacuum cleaners with enough suction to secure a bowling ball? Brisbane punk heroes The Saints have the answer, along with Demtel and the curators of the latest Nine Lives exhibition, Know Your Product. You just have to believe in what you’re selling.

Curators Stephanie Pohlman, Ellie Anderson and Anna Oh have decided that it’s time for Brisbane to make like the guy from the ShamWow advertisement and get to know what our creative product looks like. Three exhibitions over three weeks – the first is in the painting medium, featuring the likes of Luke Kidd, Alex Winters, Ben Havenaar, Genevieve Reynolds. The second exhibition is about illustration, with works by Rachel Hazzard, Autumn Skuthorpe. Last but not least, there is the photography exhibition, featuring works by Dominique Elliott, Max Tynan, Kiah Reading and a plethora of other shutterbugs.

The 32 talented emerging artists, all of whom are guilty of actively producing fresh, new bodies of work and pushing boundaries within their respective mediums prove that knowing your product speaks volumes. Even Tim Shaw would be jealous of the intimacy these artists have with their product.
