If you haven’t been out to Sunnybank for a while (or at all), this weekend should suit just fine. Museum of Brisbane have undertaken a bit of a blockbuster project involving the works of both international and local artists to create their Own Private Neon Oasis. Yes, traipsing into the depths of suburbia may seem very Gus Van Sant, but the artists on show are changing Idaho into a spectacular Neon Oasis.
Artists works include Thea Baumann’s project Hologram Holiday where her buzzing digital work gets reflected onto your nails in the confines of a local nail salon, while Melbourne art collective Makeshift suggest alternative living strategies by flashmobbing tai chi style.
Locals Boxcopy re-iterate the mapping work that they’ve previously undertaken in South East Asia and gather more local information about Sunnybank than any of your fancy apps could replicate. Korean born, Brisbane based architects, Christina Cho and Hyojin Kwon (aka. Rice Cake Mafia) collaborate in the construction of a dragon/kangaroo fusion animal. There’s a whole lot more to suburbia than fast food and Triple M. Ben Law could have told you that.
