‘Threads: Contemporary Textiles and the Social Fabric’
published on 28th September, 2011

Armed with little more than a bob, an umlaut and a loom, Gunta Stölzl wrote her way into the Taschen history books as the Bauhaus’ only female master. When she took control of the weaving workshop, textile art was still on the fringe. Just look how far it’s come e.g. that Camille video. GoMA, our own culturehaus, is about to launch Threads: Contemporary Textiles and the Social Fabric. And we all know that whatever’s on their radar is worth paying attention to. Yep, its official – stitchin’ is back in.

The exhibition brings together contemporary textile works from the gallery’s Australian, Asian and Pacific Collections. Who could have known those basements were hiding such tactile treats. I hope they use moth balls. The curatorial premise you ask? Engagement and interface with other cultures and environments through the universal language of the woven. All I’m hearing is argyle, gingham, harlequin, houndstooth, tattersall and twill. It’s what ties us together, yo. Get your Gunta on this Saturday at the Textiles Seminar in Cinema B with very special guest, Mary Jose.
