Brisbane's Best Water Holes #1 - Mt. Gravatt Quarry

· Wednesday December 5, 2012

It's only the start of December and already we feel like we're Travis Henderson in Paris, Texas or John Grant in Wake In Fright. This summer, we're going to tell you where Brisbane's best water holes are located. The first in our series is the Mt. Gravatt Quarry.

Mt. Gravatt Quarry is a prime spot for cooling down - quarries are usually meant to be cold because they go so deep into the earth, but this little gem isn’t too cold because it’s being warmed by, you know, the sweltering sun. You may know it from that Dune Rats film clip. This shimmering blue expanse of water about 20 minutes drive from the CBD and you feel like you’re in a tropical oasis not like our renowned Streets Beach. Quarries can be pretty toxic, but if you're willing, like a smoker or someone who downs too much alcohol on a daily basis, to take the risks, you may get, like a smoker, a slight feeling of satisfaction, and a little ill health for living fast and dying young. Just don't be the arsehat who hurts yourself because you haven't jumped off a rock before (practice before you go here, just in case).

We recommend not going at night. There WILL be radioactive glow-in-the-dark sharks in there, and whatever you do, don't ingest the water. You'll turn into The Hulk. It’s just another day for you and me in paradise.

NOTE: A new company is now commencing earth works at Mt. Gravatt Quarry. The owners would like people to consider an alternative swimming spot as it is private property and they don't want you to get swallowed by a tractor. In the interest of safety, blaze trails up to Mount Glorious instead.
