Art Grad Shows
published on 26th October, 2011

It’s nearly November and we all know what that means – a whole heap of people with more creative talent, more self-discipline and more unkempt facial hair than you are about to graduate from their art degrees. But really, these kids are alright and your support is appreciated – whether you make a purchase, have a chat about postmodernism or just a gander at the fruits of their labours. Hell, you can even use this as an excuse to rip off their ideas, every art student knows that imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Brisbane has a range of grad shows coming up in the next four weeks and it all kicks off this Wednesday. Thus we present: A Guide to Gallery-Hopping Art Grad Shows.

I don’t mean to pit our two biggie institutions against each other, but you basically have two options here: QUT and QCA. It’s really important to get a balance of both sides of the river (see map) if you’re going to get the most out of your hop. On Friday QUT’s Post Datum are curating a show at Metro Arts and although they aren’t technically graduating, it will make a good prelude. Next Wednesday the QUT’s Honours students are throwing together their final show at Kelvin Grove, theme: pineapples. Then it’s over to QCA where about ten grad shows are happening right up until December (nice budget, QCA). Special mention to the printmaking, photography and design shows which will be held in November. Make sure you’re at Kelvin Grove on the 10th for Sarah Ramone, QUT’s Visual Art grad show and QCA for the cream of the crop GAS Prize.

Oh, most of theses openings offer cheap or free booze and snacks for your troubles. What trouble?
