"People who only collect contemporary art are not collectors, they are just fashion victims." This is an excerpt from an email that Wim Delvoye wrote to MONA owner, David Walsh. David put this excerpt somewhere on The O (an iThing that you use to navigate the museum) and I wrote it down. The sentence summed up something that I really liked about MONA. It also made me think about Wim. "There's more to this guy than a poo machine," I thought.
Wim's 'poo machine' (called 'Cloaca') has been a real talking point at MONA. Part of David's permanent collection, it's the museum's "most hated" artwork. This is interesting because it imitates exactly what is going on inside the people who are hating it.
Anyway, MONA loves Wim and is dedicating a chuck of space to his art for the next four months. It would be a buzzkill to talk in detail about Wim's work, so I will generalise. There are over 100 works in the show (including more cloacae!). These 'works' include a guest appearance by a bloke called Tattoo Tim. Wim tattooed Tim a few years ago and Tim's back was subsequently sold to a collector. As part of this agreement, Tim is 'exhibited' four times a year and his back will be framed upon his death. It sounds morbid but (according to our source) Tim is the "friendliest, calmest person" that they have ever met. This lovely, inky man will conduct daily tours through Wim's show until late January. Lovers welcome, haters also encouraged.
