The milk crate seats and stank of Caledonian Lane may be gone but the spirit of St Jerome’s continues at The Resurrection. It’s the latest project for Jerome Borazio and Danny Rogers, whose original bar (RIP) spawned friendships, toastie recipes, the Temper Trap, cockroaches and an international music festival.
Located at the East Brunswick end of Lygon Street, the Resurrection has plenty of the relaxed atmosphere that made Jerome’s so popular. The fit-out (by the guys at ‘Totally Hammered’) features ingeniously repurposed materials, from a bar made of fencing bricks to recycled wooden shelves indoors and out. Compared to the Caledonian Lane courtyard/enclosure the outdoor area is huge – with a wooden deck, an undercover bar, plants growing happily in garden beds and no steps to fall down!
The menu reflects the Resurrection’s hours of operation – with croque monsieurs and toasties during the day and more dinnerish options (beef cheeks with creamy mash; waffles with saffron pears, hazelnut labna and rose water maple syrup) later in the arvo/night. House shiraz and chardonnay comes from 30 Mile and the now ubiquitous longneck is joined by the 500ml Melbourne ‘tallboy’ can. This weekend is a soft opening though, so go easy on the ordering. Jerome’s is dead! Long live Jerome’s.
