Sydney’s Richard In Your Mind have followed up last year’s pastiche-y psychedelic hit My Volcano with a new album called SUN. Just to make sure you know how serious they are about vibing out in the sun, most of the songs are about the sun and the cover art is taken from everyone’s favourite sun-powered optical device: the kaleidoscope.
The album also sees Richard Cartwright and his friends play every instrument under the sun (mini moogs, guitars, flutes, saxophones and something called a ‘Kaossillator’, to name just a few). The whole thing drifts along like a hazy day at the beach with olives and cider. Which is interesting because they actually thank olives (the best solar super fruit there is [yes it’s a fruit, I looked it up]) in the album credits.
In order to do the album justice my girlfriend and I wagged work, went to the beach and listened to it in the sun. When the delicious guitar lick of “maybe when the sun comes down” shone through our little speakers, a father climbed down some rocks and walked past us.
He was followed his identical twin sons! His sons were dressed in identical orange t-shirts. We both thought this was a moment of great poignancy and hilarity. When they were out of sight we made out until I was sunburnt. God it was a good time. Thankyou Richard in Your Mind.
