New works by Craig Dermody
published on 17th November, 2009

Craig Dermody is one of these cross-over talents (I’m looking at you Darren Sylvester) who should never be forced to decide between art and music. Apart from his sometimes commendably bright track-suited work in Spider Vomit, Lindsey Low Hand and Scott and Charlene’s Wedding, he is a maker of necromantic paintings.

Taking readymade op shop sort of artworks  – idyllic European landscapes – he inserts witches, ghosts and tripping monsters. They invade the pre-existing kitschiness like protective spirits invoked to watch over your sharehouse hallway. Sylvester, who included Craig’s work in the Kings ARI show It’s Alright, It’s Magic last October, described him as part of a group whose "work can seem flippant and small, yet that’s how we feel at times and that’s what makes them magic."

Craig will summon a new bunch of operative spirits at the opening of his solo show at the Somewhere Store launch tonight. Bring your stoner visionary eyeballs.
