OWN Books presents 581c-Volume 1 by Thobias Fäldt
published on 15th July, 2009

Creatures of the dark might want to make their way down to Swensk tonight. Better yet, you could lurk down the lane a bit, facing the other way, playing with something brightly coloured. That way, you will really enter the spirit of Thobias Fäldt‘s work.

Though taken almost exclusively in pitch black conditions, Fäldt’s photos have a brightness to them that seem at odds with all that inkiness. It’s like it’s always night over there. Makes you feel silly for complaining about the slight dip in temperature we call winter, the down side of which can honestly be averted by a pair of gloves and a decent jumper.

In a less literal sense, the work in 581c-Volume 1 has a dreamlike quality not unlike the unsettling territory explored by David Lynch. Old men appear out of nowhere, a dirty snow creature creeps across cobblestones, young girls explore ominous pathways. This event marks the first in an ongoing series of Thobias’s work from OWN Books, with accompanying slide show and a selection of large-scale prints. That’s a lot of darkness.
