Sumi Ink Club drawing meet
published on 8th October, 2011

Sarah Rara and Luke Fischbeck of Lucky Dragons are in town for the Melbourne Festival, which means their art project the Sumi Ink Club is here too! Founded in 2005, it’s an LA-based collective that invites anyone/everyone to make collaborative drawings. The materials are limited to black ink and brushes, and the results are highly detailed topsy-turvy murals that everyone ends up wanting on their tables, walls, windows, chairs, pillowcases and bodies.

But the real purpose of Sumi Ink Club is conversation. Or, as they say, “using group drawing as a means to open and fortify social interactions that bleed into everyday life”. Or, as I say, wooooo gossip! Here they are drawing and nattering at MoMA PS1 as part of last year’s Printed Matter NY Art Book Fair. If this looks like your kind of Sunday afternoon, head to the Arts Centre tomorrow for the Sumi Ink Club Melbourne meet. All ages, all humans, all styles welcome.
