Paris isn’t all croissants and jovial haw-hawing. You only need to scratch its Eiffel-encrusted exterior to reveal a long history of rioting and racial tension. Mathieu Kassovitz’s widely acclaimed film La Haine is a one-day window into this world, unfurling on the outskirts of Paris among the housing projects. As part of Melbourne Music, the film will screen with live accompaniment from DJ Dexter of The Avalanches acclaim, mixing the score on the spot to provide an entirely new, one-off ghetto backdrop of surging hip hop. – REJ
