‘Prog rock’ is generally meant to mean evoke one of two things. Either Rick Wakeman in a diaphanous golden cape, surrounded by banks of analogue synths playing music in time signatures that look more like math problems and sound like Rachmaninoff on mushrooms with lyrics by a developmentally disabled J R R Tolkien. Or, more recently, it has become a kind of shorthand for rock with a certain expansiveness. The kind of thing that has people reaching for adjectives like ‘cinematic’. On Sierra fall most emphatically into the latter category. Playing with instrumental post rock outfit Television Sky- contrasting roaring squalls of guitar with tasteful piano chords since 2009- and The Shards. This will also be the last show Coins ever play. The internet will not miss them but you just might.
