Very good art (or very bad art) can render even the biggest mouths wordless, but very rarely does art arise without the association of text. Subtext is an Un Magazine initiative that presents a small window into the diversity of form and the significance of writing in art, whether it’s the notated research that comprises the background to Helen Johnson’s images, the contextual scenarios and narratives to Darren Sylvester’s photgraphs, or Vernon Ah-Kee’s agit-prop-statements. This exhibition is a rare opportunity to engage with the usually unseen text that acts as a corollary to artistic practice. – REJ
