Early yesterday morning, vandals from the Melbourne Writers Festival snuck around the city, spray painting yellow shoe prints on the sidewalks. One mark is opposite the police station on Swanston Street, which they told me wasn’t exactly easy to paint.
The new painted spots are part of an interactive book, released ahead of the festival. Readers of Stories From The Street are invited to roam around Melbourne, find the spots, close one eye, and line up the pages with the landmarks surrounding them. There are holes in the pages that let the street signs, random scribbles and public landmarks form each story, which appears in front of your eyes like a 3D puzzle.
There are only 500 of the books available, some of which were released yesterday morning, so you will need to motor to get one.
