Neither Emma Gallagher nor Sean Jeffery have any qualms about double denim. “Quadruple denim all the way!” jokes Emma while dreaming of Canadian tuxedos accompanied by matching cummerbunds and handkerchiefs. After two years above the Gem making jeans for bar staff and regulars, Sean is reopening his studio as MTO Industry – a new hybrid gallery/shop/studio in Northcote.
Sitting next to a classic old Greek dude club/cafe in the rough and tumble part of High Street – one that seems appropriate for the rugged and tough fabric that is denim – MTO is not a tailor shop but operates in a similar fashion. For $200 you can get measured up and return in a week or two for a pair of handmade jeans made on classic equipment including a five thread interlocker, a Union Special from the ’50s and a beautiful old Pfaff machine.
As well as their own jeans, tote bags and chambray shirts MTO will stock garments and work by Candle of Vision, Lily Fraser, Blacklisted Belts, Dell Stewart, Reverend Troutbeck, Mona Electricity and BSBS clothing. MTO Industry opens this weekend as part of the Craft Cubed festival.
