THAT store

Apparently, the first denim jeans were made for a bunch of sailors in the Genoese Navy in the 1600s, and they were dragged in large mesh nets behind the ships when they needed cleaning. They only had one brand back then so you didn’t have some salty dog trying to swap his GAP bootlegs for your Mondays.

The present-day denim market is unashamedly chubby with too many brands, and it’s tough to sort the cream labels from the crap labels. THAT store saw this cry for help and answered – first in Sydney, but now (as of five months ago) in Prahran. They’ve selected the cream of the crop for us and have a uncommonly large range of sizes and styles for each brand: Corpus, Levi’s Black, Paige, Cheap Monday, Nudie, Edwin, Superfine, Paige, Crafted and more. Want cheap? Dr. Denim. Want high-end? Earnest Sewn. The spectrum is complete and this raw, woody hall is decked from end-to-end with slender pull-out shelves so it’s easy to navigate.

There are also antlers in the change rooms, which is a small sacrifice for a reindeer to make so you can try on many jeans. Try to restrain yourself though, as a landlubber you’ll have to clean your hundred kilos of denim at the laundromat.
