Easy as Vegan Pie cooking classes
by US

Sunday 9 October, 4pm. We’ve been reading Carla Sammut’s blog Easy As Vegan Pie for more than a year now, and every time we do we think, “Wowee that looks better than meat food!” But then we think, “Hold the phone what is an azuki bean? What is blue cheezly? WHAT IS AGAR POWDER?” In the educational spirit of her blog page ‘Tofu (WTF)‘, Carla’s stepping in with two introductory vegan cooking classes this November.

They’re happening at Milkwood (120 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East) on Thursday 3 November and Sunday 27 November, 6.30pm to 8.30pm both nights. The groups will be limited to 13 people per two-hour class, you’ll be able to sample all the food cooked and everyone will get take-home recipe sheets for the vegan versions of pate, basil pesto, bolognese, caramalised onion quiche and dark chocolate tart. Tickets are $110. Find details about student discounts and free places on the bookings page or email carla.sammut@gmail.com if you have questions.

Anyway, this little guy phoned and he said you should totally go.

January Biannual submissions callout
by US

Saturday 8 October, 5.32pm. January Biannual editor Christian McQueen dropped us a line to say they’re looking for submissions for the January 2012 edition. The January January! “Students and practitioners across all artistic disciplines are invited to pitch their concepts and ideas reflecting on the following text:

To strip everything off.
To contrast, transform & reassemble.
The evolution of essential ideas.
Silent, rudimentary beauty.”

Issue #1 included Amos Fricke‘s photography of Berlin, an interview with Central Saint Martin’s womenswear teacher Howard Tangye, Akiko Keuchi‘s knotted silk thread sculptures and a photoshoot drawing on the Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson archives. Pick up a copy at Mag Nation, Readings Carlton, Alpha 60, Incu, Perimeter or Brunswick Street Bookstore to see what it’s about. Send your ideas for issue #2 to info@januarybiannual.com by 11 November.

Want to be in a music video/art project for Melbourne band Alpine? Send us a photo! Don’t worry if the photo is shit, you have a pimple or a wooden leg, we love you just as you are.” They need applications by Monday 10 October, and they’re filming on Sunday 16 October, so put some wax on that pegleg, polish up your pizza face and email contact@lucischroder.com.

New Eddy Current track!
by US

Thursday 29 September, 2.37pm. Eddy Current Suppression Ring’s current break from performing really makes us ‘hiat’ the term ‘on-hiatus’. But good news just arrived in our inbox in the form of a link to ‘Walking In Unison’ – a 10-minute jam which is also the A-side off their new 12”, which is available right now at Wooly Bully (as well as through US label Captcha, who recently released a split from some of our other faves – Nothing People and Mondo Phase Band). Add this to the news that a 22-track ECSR singles and rarities collection (including covers such as The Chosen Few’s ‘There’s A Lot Of It Going Around’ and The Go-Gos’ ‘We Got The Beat’) will be released next month, and this might as well be ECSR week. Happy ECSR WEEK!

Tote Calendar photo submissions - final callout
by US

Thursday 22 September, 10.10am. “You may remember last year we had an idea to produce a Tote Calendar?” says Amanda Palmer. “Well, it didn’t end up happening but we’ve revived the idea and the calendar will be available for sale from November.” Which is perfect because that coincides with the Tote’s 30th birthday celebrations (happening 31 October to 4 December). Anyway, Amanda and team are looking for image submissions. They want “photos (and posters) featuring your favourite gigs as well as reflecting the huge array of punters and bands that have graced the pub in its 30-year-long life (give or take a few months..!)” In the end, 13 will be chosen to feature in the calendar but THERE WILL BE PRIZES FOR THE DEADLY 13. Email hi-res submissions to gen@baropen.com.au no later than 5pm on Friday 30 September. (This is our submission so it looks like there are still 13 places available.)
