Thursday 22 September, 10.10am. “You may remember last year we had an idea to produce a Tote Calendar?” says Amanda Palmer. “Well, it didn’t end up happening but we’ve revived the idea and the calendar will be available for sale from November.” Which is perfect because that coincides with the Tote’s 30th birthday celebrations (happening 31 October to 4 December). Anyway, Amanda and team are looking for image submissions. They want “photos (and posters) featuring your favourite gigs as well as reflecting the huge array of punters and bands that have graced the pub in its 30-year-long life (give or take a few months..!)” In the end, 13 will be chosen to feature in the calendar but THERE WILL BE PRIZES FOR THE DEADLY 13. Email hi-res submissions to gen@baropen.com.au no later than 5pm on Friday 30 September. (This is our submission so it looks like there are still 13 places available.)

Tuesday 13 September, 11.48am. Herr Blick’s exclusive single scissor service is soon to be a double. Steven is giving one lucky someone the opportunity to work with him and take up a space in his beautiful new digs at the top end of Collins. If you’re a qualified hairdresser and you’d like to hone your craft in an original parquet-floored studio, surrounded by furniture by Grandfather’s Axe and vintage prints by Galerie Montmartre, enquire within. Overseas experience is not a must, but a definite advantage.
Emina Dzananovic is about to unleash a beautiful new range of OK-OK socks and stockings, and she needs amateur/volunteer models for her photoshoot! It is a skipping theme, and they’re filming in the Carlton Gardens on Sunday 11 September from 2pm. Meet near the big fountain. Film man Keith Deverell will be behind the lens and Emina will bring socks and stockings and skipping ropes for everyone. What to wear? Well it will mainly be the bottom of your legs in frame, but they say, “We are looking at a wintery modern vintage look with foolish skirts, either muted but also tartans and patterns. Shoe wise we would love to see some brogues or wingtips – and sand shoes converse for skipping in.” It sounds like one of the funnest ways to spend a Sunday afternoon and we’ll be there! Which just proves you don’t have to be an expert skipper. Like, at ALL. If you have questions, email Keith: hello@keithdeverell.net
Thursday 8 September, 3.58pm. First off, some ground rules. Anybody who uses the word flaneur gets stabbed, getting stabbed is no reason not to appreciate art and appreciating art is the goal of the enterprise. You know all the Mis-Design events we’ve been writing about? We’re doing a tour of them this Saturday! The Pirate Radio Tower, the Pacific Women’s Weaving Circle at Alpha 60 and the Adam Kalkin Tennis Academy. We’ll climb the tower, weave some weft and work on our power-baseline game. We shall traipse so gaily through this town, our little hearts filled with the joy only situational art can bring. Though that’s not strictly true – we are all going to be riding our bikes. So, my budding aesthete. You got a bike? You want in on this shit? Want to ride the good ship connoisseurship around this crazy old town? We have a double pass to give away! To enter, email melbourne.win@thethousands.com.au with the subject ‘the joy only situational art can bring’.
