Matthew Barney on Film
published on 30th June, 2010

I still remember my first Matthew Barney film. It was the winter of 2006 and I still wasn’t sure if I liked David Lynch. This guy I was crushing on asked me to go see Drawing Restraint 9 and I said yes straightaway without knowing what it was all about.

So we go to the film and we didn’t make out in the cinema as I’d hoped; but, on the plus side, Barney totally blew my eyeballs out of my brain! I like to say it was love at first Vaseline schmear – with Barney, anyway, not that loser who wouldn’t make out with me.

Now you, too, can experience love at first petroleum jelly blob when ACMI screens their supersize Matthew Barney on Film season featuring the aforementioned Drawing Restraint 9, the ‘making-of’ film No Restraint and *drum-roll* the entire Cremaster Cycle.

Don’t think if you’ve seen one Cremaster you’ve seen them all, either. One has the drummer from Slayer, another has the Chrysler building as a maypole, another stars Norman Mailer as Harry Houdini…and so on. It will really be worth packing some extra choc tops and doing the whole marathon – your eyeballs will thank me later.
