Tak Chee House

Do you remember Tak Chee opposite Kakulas? Word has it that Mr. Tak Chee’s plan was to sell the place and go back to Malaysia, let the new owners run it into the ground, come back, buy it for cheap and do it all over again. What an inane plan, huh? Oh, but it actually worked. After a decade of silly business games, the original Tak Chee is back to stay (albeit up the other end of William Street) and has a flashing neon sign to tell everyone about it.

A small, authentic Malaysian restaurant famous for its hainan chicken and rice, char quey teow, and tom yum soup, Tak Chee’s stuff is full with traditional Malay flavours; fresh ginger, sambal, lime and chilli. The menu is not for the delicate palate; if you ask for extra hot, your ears may bleed! As for the prawn and okra dish? Loaded with garlic – but by god!, it’s delicious. With food this tasty (and cheap) we’ll book Mr Tak Chee a return from Malaysia any day.
