Getting a good meal in Northbridge can be a precarious adventure. I once took a gamble on a steak chain near James St and to this day I still have nightmares about the cold (refrigerated) lamb shank they served with BBQ sauce, mashed ‘potato’ and frozen veggies. Since then, I’ve kept my Northbridge eating habits to the ‘safe bets’ (ie north of Newcastle St), so it was with a little trepidation that I hit Tasik, an Indonesian restaurant smack bang between The Shed and a backpackers.
Any doubts I had were soon dispelled by the coziness of this transformed workers’ cottage, which incorporates a large collection of Indo souvenirs. The food is some of the best I’ve had in Northbridge; the chicken satay is amazing (and cheap – only $7 for an entrée), and the Rendang beef curry ($14) is understandably one of their most popular dishes. It’s BYO – definitely recommend taking along some beers to wash down the spicy, flavourful dishes. I’ve happily added Tasik to my list of Northbridge favourites, and put bad memories of that cold lamb shank to bed.
