It’s fun to eat out, we do it all the time. But it’s no fun to have the guilt of the third world’s hunger on your shoulders while you bury your face in enchilada. The socially conscious restaurateur behind Zambrero Fresh Mexican Grill started out as a med student, paying his way through school by working in Mexican takeouts. He later swapped the books for a career in food.
But I didn’t know any of this until later – the captivating iridescent green lighting and blackboard out front promising fresh made guacamole were enough to lure me into Zambrero. Once there, I faced the first world problem of choosing between the Burrito & Bol or the Dos Capas & Taco. Needless to say, my slow cooked pinto beans, tomato salsa and Jalapeno verde tasted all the better when the guy behind the counter told me that for the plate I just ordered, Zambrero would feed a plate to another (infinitely more hungry) person somewhere in the developing world.
A full stomach and a clear conscience – it’s amazing just how much loose change buys at Zambrero.
