INTRO STREET READ HEAR LOOK SHOP WATCH GOODS STRAY EAT/DRINK OUT WIN ABOUT

Thursday February 18

Good things happen when people doing cool things reach out to other people doing cool things, and they do cool things together. When Peter saw Warren, a rad book happened. When Kain got fixed up with Fiona, some real nice readymade fashion products happened. When Dean, Brita and Andy hooked up, a beautiful film happened.

This morning while we were putting the issue together, a man with a reaaallly long pony tail was drinking orange juice next to us. He told us that right now in Perth, there are people doing cool things everywhere, but that we're spread out all over the place. All we gotsta do is reach out and connect and this place is gonna go off like a creative bomb. Wise dude!

SixThousand 028 - reach out

Star: The Life & Wild Times of Warren Beatty

What:
Star: The Life & Wild Times of Warren Beatty

Who:
Peter Biskind

Where:
Any decent bookstore

How much:
$50

Whether depicting Robert Altman's fondness for whorehouse blowjobs in Easy Riders, Raging Bulls or character assassinating Harvey Weinstein in Down and Dirty Pictures, Peter Biskind has a tendency for getting sued. Now he's readied his lawyers for the release of Star: The Life & Wild Times of Warren Beatty.

The Stella Adler-trained Warren Beatty acted Off Broadway before following big sis (one Shirley Maclaine) into movie-stardom. Thus followed a veritable fuckfest. Nobody was safe. Not Natalie Wood, Julie Christie, nor Dianne Keaton. Not Cher aged sweet-sixteen! I could go on. He'd coo his now famous "What's new pussycat?" into the receiver to starlets all over greater LA. Along the way Beatty became a prime protagonist in ‘New Hollywood' with his seminal Bonnie and Clyde. He began directing his own films such as Dick Tracy (yep banged Madonna too) and eventually ‘settled down' with his Bugsy co-star Anette Benning.

Now Warren's suing Peter Biskind. What for? Claiming the actor has slept with 13,000 women. Own it Mr Beatty!

  Golden Staph Cassette Tape

Who:
Golden Staph

What:
Golden Staph Cassette Tape (four tracks)

On:
Independent

For those who found a cassette walkman to be an item of private humiliation at the dawn of the Discman, never fear because Golden Staph are here. Resurrecting an all but obsolete technological artefact in magnetic tape, the lightning bolt band of do-it-yourself Perth luddites are one of many independents snubbing the digital era in favour of good old-fashioned tangibility.

Boasting a barrel of members from the local underground -
including Astral Travel, Bermuda, Mass Birth and Clever Species?,
Golden Staph flaunt their immediate proto-punk inspired ‘fuck you' in the form of 69 hand-painted, collaged and dubbed audio-cassettes. Fully live keyboards, drums and guitars are thrown forth, feedback and all, while vocalist Amber Gempton bemoans the tough luck of drug prohibition and paralysis. As the audio quality inevitably fades, know that Golden Staph's creative distinction and kick arse artwork will not.

During high school, the major art project I submitted to the Year 12 Perspectives were dodgy noir illustrations inspired by the comic book Sin City. Not my proudest moment, I'll admit. But hey, cracking the art world is a tough gig! Even with the internet allowing any teen to upload their dodgy noir sketches, it's difficult to be noticed amongst all the Robert Pattinson charcoals.

Thankfully some bright young things are taking the initiative with Debut, a group exhibition of seven artists between 16 and 18 tackling various mediums. Amongst them include the Buffalo Parade's introspective photos, Cheeks' warped street art , and Yashi Renoir's music-inspired paintings .

A new art zine, untitled (YOUTH), will also be launched, so you can take home these youngins' in paper form. Rest assured, the future of art is in good hands, and will likely not feature anything inspired by 300 (seriously, kids: Frank Miller sucks).

Who doesn't love a cheeky butcher? The meat trade sure does allow for some flirty puns. Alice fell for Sam's rump roast. Kath couldn't resist Kel's tender loin. Perth ladies have been swooning for the Torre boys' high quality meats since the 50s. The Torres are old school butchers, having passed down through the generations an intimate knowledge of mammals.

At Torre's, you can get the very best quality conventional cuts, sliced to your requirements. They can also hook you up with rarer specialty items, like the beef cheek used in this incredible gnocchi. But Torre's not just for the ladies. Swarthy Mediterranean types slicing think hunks of cow on tree stump butchers' blocks? Lashings of potent machismo! Not to mention thick cut scotch fillet fit for the finest manwich. Whether you're a lady after beef cheek (or just a cheeky wink) or a man after an honest to goodness steak hit, turn to the Torre boys (we've got no beef with that).

Thanks to Luna Palace, we have six doubles! To enter, email win@sixthousand.com.au with the subject line ‘War is a drug'

Sergeant Will James (Jeremy Renner) is the kind of maverick that war movies so often ask us to admire: fearless, resourceful, wisecracking and soft-hearted with kids. But screenwriter Mark Boal and director Kathryn Bigelow slowly reveal the devastating truth: James is fucked in the head... and he likes it that way.

After the leader (Guy Pearce) of a US Army bomb disposal squad is blown up by an improvised explosive device in Iraq, James replaces him and quickly pisses off the others, Sergeant JT Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and Specialist Owen Eldridge (Brian Geraghty). As they disarm a diabolical variety of insurgent weaponry and count down the days until their tour ends, they're astounded that James seems so careless with his own life - and theirs.

Kinetic, atmospheric and taut with tension, The Hurt Locker is a provocative meditation on the psychology of war. The supporting characters are archetypes of modern soldiering: the cynical defence contractor (Ralph Fiennes); the blue-blooded army shrink (Christian Camargo); the good-ole-boy colonel (David Morse). But it's James who really haunts: who only really comes to life with the adrenalin-charged imminence of death.

  ffiXXed SS10, Unseen Utopias

What:
ffiXXed SS10, Unseen Utopias

Where:
The Thousands Shop and Fat online

How much:
From $110

ffiXXed is a collaborative art and design project that recognises the need for sustainable creative practices, delving beyond pure aesthetic to create readymade fashion products that are a pragmatic response to living arrangements. Helmed by ex-pat Australians and Internetwork contributors Kain Picken and Fiona Lau, ffiXXed is created between studios in Berlin, New York, and Hong Kong, essentially maintaining a roaming headquarters responsive to global influences.

The SS10 range Unseen Utopias is an extension of the fashion meets function concept. This is not to say your t-shirt will know how you like your eggs, or that your pants will do the walking for you (this isn't 2017), but every piece in this cool, clean, crisp collection of linens and lightweight jerseys is intended to be wearable in an everyday sense.

Then there's some playful additions like the Shopperbag Shirt, the distant relative of ffiXXed's SS09 collaboration with BLESS, a shirt you can also carry your groceries in, and the Trench Windbreaker - all business upfront but casual windbreaker out back. This is what it means to be truly 'smart/casual'.

Do you remember Tak Chee opposite Kakulas? Word has it that Mr. Tak Chee's plan was to sell the place and go back to Malaysia, let the new owners run it into the ground, come back, buy it for cheap and do it all over again. What an inane plan, huh? Oh, but it actually worked. After a decade of silly business games, the original Tak Chee is back to stay (albeit up the other end of William Street) and has a flashing neon sign to tell everyone about it.

A small, authentic Malaysian restaurant famous for its hainan chicken and rice, char quey teow, and tom yum soup, Tom Yum's stuff is full with traditional Malay flavours; fresh ginger, sambal, lime and chilli. The menu is not for the delicate palate; if you ask for extra hot, your ears may bleed! As for the prawn and okra dish? Loaded with garlic - but by god!, it's delicious. With food this tasty (and cheap) we'll book Mr Tak Chee a return from Malaysia any day.

Thanks to PIAF, we have a dbl pass up for grabs! Email win@sixthousand.com.au with the subject line 'Everyone will be famous for 15 minutes'

It was a golden rule of Andy Warhol's The Factory in ‘60s New York that on one's initial arrival at the space - be you rock star, celebutante or famed street hustler - you would have to pose for Mr Warhol's Super 8 camera. It was Andy's way of giving everyone their own 15 minutes of fame. Now, over 40 years later, a select few of these famed screen tests have been gathered together under the title 13 Most Beautiful.

This show sees the tests set to the music of New York-based husband and wife team Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips  (who also wrote music for Noah Baumbach's film The Squid & The Whale). Dean & Brita come to PIAF to perform their soundtrack, live, to the film, which screens at the Astor next weekend.

Expect a stark exercise in portraiture which captures the intensity of a generation - think Lou Reed, Ann Buchanan, Nico and Edie Sedgewick. The music itself, including the odd Reed cover, is a soundscape of nostalgia and ingenuity, the perfect backdrop to one of Warhol's greatest legacies.

When it comes to coffee the Zekkans know my poison: Jackson high-fives me, we swap ‘sups', and he hangdogs my brew. But today Jackson's mouth is fucking watering. Turns out Romina's mum is bringing in her traditional Spanish Arroz a La Valenciana paella with chicken and chorizo. What's more he says I'm welcome to bring in a six-pack to wash it down! Jackson's lips are still moving ("...we're starting to sell freshly cut flowers, and looking for a local artist to redo the mural") but all I can hear is "BYO. BYO. BYO..." - JJ

When you're music blog darlings from NY who borrowed your name from a children's book, it's easy to see how punks might think of you as ‘bland piffle'. One listen of T P B P A H's shoegazey guitar-pop will make you rile against the piffle tag. The thought of them playing live against the looming Perth cityscape has us ready to get our soft sway on, something like this teen-movie-climax circa 1986. - TF.

Remember Naughty by Nature? They were in Perth last week. But that's besides the point. What you need to know is that waaaay back in 1999, Naughty By Nature dropped a Jamboree on the hip-hop world. And everyone was like, ‘hot damn!'. Cut & Paste's Jamboree for Jocelyn is a fundraiser for a friend of the Perth music scene, Jocelyn Bartlem, who suffered life changing spinal injuries. This Sundae, wave your hands to the likes of Naik, Injured Ninja and Diger Rokwell as if we family. Say hot-damn hot-damn we wanna jamboree! - JM.

So turns out City Of Perth love SixThousand sooooo much they've renamed their entire Food and Wine Month as 'Eat Drink Perth', in tribute to our awesome EATDRINK section. No, not really. They probably think we're a bunch of scabby journalists with caffeine for brains. But there is a shitload of genuinely fun looking stuff on the cards for the entire month of March.

Like a massive masked gang bang on the East Perth dock (ha, we just said gang bang but we really meant dinner party'). Mondo Butchers are having a sheep meet extravaganza cunningly disguised as a fancy Venetian carnivale (hogget and lamb, we tell you!).

Make cheese in the dark at Scitech at nightime, or noodle yourself a spot into one of the Wandering Wok tours through the Asian supermarkets of Northbridge.

Tucked away in Colin St, West Perth, Upper Crust Cooking like to get people drunk, and teach them how to cook. Or perhaps the other way around? Anyway, there's a Tapas class with the head of Duende, an advanced cupcake class, and a handmade pasta class! Thanks to Eat Drink Perth, we have a double pass to an Upper Crust cooking class of your choice, valid anytime during Eat Drink Perth and valued at $170, up for grabs! Just answer this delicious question:

This week's question:
The best thing to drink with drunken chicken is:

a) a sweet whiney white

b) that chicken has had too many already

c) I'm a plastered goose, on the loose!

d) Angelico
