Matthew Christopher Saville, ‘This is The Wild’
published on 29th September, 2011

Looking at Matthew Saville’s photography is like watching a whole season of Skins in one sitting; both make you doubt the validity of your youth. Where was my rock ‘n’ roll world tour?’ you may ask in vain; ‘How come I never got to dance onstage with The Flaming Lips?’, ‘What happened to my endless afternoons drinking longnecks with my shirt off?’

Saville portrays these young turbulent years as a time for forging identities, travelling restlessly and of course, obligatory partying. The youthful exuberance in his photography is tempered with poignancy – full of recognition that part of what makes our youthful years so invigorating (not to mention stunningly beautiful) is the fact that they inevitably end, so what matters is what you make of them. And if nothing else, This is The Wild stands as testament to somebody’s well spent youth.
