If you’ve ever been to Berlin, or even if you haven’t, you’d probably know that the place is just covered with graffiti. It doesn’t matter if it’s a newly restored building, a squat or recently commissioned piece of public art; you name it, someone’s defaced it. I for one think it’s great when people scribble anarchist symbols and cuss words all over a fresh coat of stucco-coloured paint but unfortunately not everyone feels the same way.
You don’t need to look very hard to find horrifying stories of Banksies being ordered down in London, or ROAs being removed by Stone Age councils; it seems local government still has a long way to go when it comes to the ‘street art’ question. While we can’t guarantee any changes in governmental policy towards graffiti and free expression in Perth, Belgian street artist ROA and his cute large-scale animal-folk will be paying a visit to FORM Gallery. Here he’ll present his global crusade against the urban jungle for all to ogle. Fingers crossed he leaves our own government body a parting gift to bicker over too.
