Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts’ next show, Alternating Currents: Japanese Art After March 2011, is one of those amazing, multi-faceted art experiences that, during the pre-exhibition period, presents in so many different forms that it’s challenging to work out exactly what is going to be happening; a mystery that may not be solved until PICA whips off the metaphoric drop sheet on November 11. In the meantime, there is a taste of what’s to come…
Nadegata Instant Party are part of the talented gang of Japanese artists that will deliver site-specific works for Alternating Currents. NIP’s project is to turn the PICA bar into a community meeting place. How are they going to do this? By creating a pop-up cake cafe called ‘Yellow Cake St’!
But it’s not just any old cake NIP want to serve – it’s a special cake, called yellow cake. Only problem is that yellow cake, erm…doesn’t actually exist! But NIP are going to ask everyone they meet in Perth (on the street, in cafes, in shops) for a recipe, and they’re not stopping ‘til they find one. Maybe you have a yellow lemon cake, a yellow banana cake, or a yellow custard pie (or a recipe that combines all three?) that could fit the bill? Take your best cake creation (or recipe) along to the Yellow Cake Street tasting session and be a part of the delicious definition.
