30 More Days of Zines: Perth Zine Collective Residency at PICA
published on 3rd October, 2011

The other day my Dad was flicking through a small-ish, A5 publication. He told me it was the Holden Club Monthly Magazine (it’s a club, they race Holdens, he’s a member). I had a look at it: printed with a personal colour printer, using some basic typesetting, stapled together, not more than 20 pages long.

I said, ‘Dad, that’s not a magazine, that’s a zine’. Then I had to explain to Dad that a zine is like a small, hand-made publication, not as ritzy as a glossy mag, not bounded or set as per a professional book. “Well there you go,” says Dad, “We’re pretty creative, us revheads.”

The Perth Zine Collective are zinemakers-in-residence at PICA for another month – they’ve got all the kit for you to make your own zine, or browse Aunty Mabel’s extensive zine library (creatively housed in a milk crate fort). My Dad will go with you, he is down with zines!
