Grad shows for fashion students are a bit like the debutante balls of yesteryear: the outfit is paramount, appearance determines futures and it’s an entrance into a world only ever glimpsed at. Fortunately for us, the similarities end there – you’d be loathe to find someone whose just spent three years working their butt off, sending white taffetta or peach satin numbers down the runway.
The upcoming final-year Central TAFE graduate show will skip on the taffeta, but will have a regal feel, taking place in the gilt environs of His Majesty’s Theatre. Entitled Sixteen Acts, the presentation of the students’ work will replicate the format of a play with each act showcasing the collection of one student.
Taken together, these finite units represent the young talent emerging out from under the watchful gaze of their lecturers and into the world of potential suitors. But not before somebody spikes the punch.
