The Australian Ballet performs 'Vanguard'

As a general rule, people don't like change. So can you just imagine the gripes Balanchine, Kylián and McGregor (three of the most incredible choreographers of our time and “ballet game changers”) dealt with when they invented contemporary ballet? But thank God they persisted! Too much Swan Lake and we would all be crippled neurotics; unaware of the many other ways our body can be used for expression.

The Australian Ballet are performing the triple bill Vanguard, to celebrate the pioneering genius of these three men. Balanchine's 'The Four Temperaments' is a work inspired by the medieval belief that people are made up of four different elements. It is sharp and angular, particularly when compared to the sculptural, 'full' movements in Kylián's 'Bella Figura'. McGregor's 'Dyad 1929' is also on the program, and you can watch the making of it here.
