African Feeling
published on 12th October, 2009

I have these pantaloons. They’re high waisted and silk, emblazoned with this African print. Deep mustard, olive and teracotta scenes of elephants, aardvarks and native jungles. Deep right? Anyway, when I wear them, I get this African feeling – like I’m Babtunde Olantunji and we’re riding the national groove. It makes me break out African proverbs like "even though the baby monkey appear so ugly it mother love it anyway." It affects the way I walk and then, thankfully, I get hungry and cease quoting.

Of the minimal African cuisine offering in Sydney, African Feeling is the sauce, with low light, beats and an ability to sate my appetite for primal slow stew and home made ginger beer.**Born in Ghana, the head Chef, Hudu Alhassan, has been riding this feeling for over 15 years. And as the African continent contains some 61 countries and territories, his menu lives heavily in the regions of Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Ethiopia. All this means is it’s not only fufu and exotic game that will play percussion on your teeth. They have Moroccan beef cigars and parcels shaped like pyramids. But most importantly my pants match the walls.
