For JD – With Love and Squalor
published on 1st October, 2009

France you have given me many things – family holidays in the mountains when all the cool kids went to the beach, long car journeys reading until it made me spew, Dad being slapped in the face by a monkey, a pontoon face-plant while trying to impress the lake boys with my front flip, Serge cassette tapes on repeat, castles, wineries, ravioli in a can…

And now you give me Estelle Deve – thankyou France, I think I’ll keep her. Not only does she write one of the least tedious fashion blogs going around, she’s actually really nice. AND she makes jewellery. What a woman.**Estelle’s first collection takes inspiration from JD (not that one, the other one) and his 1953 anthology of novels For Esme – With Love and Squalor. There’s a pewter-cast, chain-layered piece for each novel – from the ‘Down by the Dinghy’ double-ring, to the ‘Pretty Mouth and Green my Eyes’ necklace. Who needs Cliff’s notes when you can wear ‘The Laughing Man’ on your head.
