If the Brain Children cover art isn’t enough to make you want to listen to their self-titled debut EP, I don’t know if there’s anything I can say that will. It sits somewhere between a piss take of rap videos and an endorsement of body stockings – just to give you an idea.
The EP is one slick, smooth and super-catchy sounding package. Killer opening track ‘Luck Land of Skin’ errs on the fun side of disco with a break down that almost started an at-home-clap-along. ‘Guts’ bring Stereolab comparisons to the fore with breathy girl vocals and a delicate guitar-synth backing. But the best thing is both these tracks provide the lighter side to the shadier sound of the rest of EP which features a sexy near-falsetto (and auto-tune), that harks back to early Prince; layed down over classic club sounds edged with krautrock.**I’ve heard that Brain Children members Max Kohane and Mikey Young have dabbled in other styles of music but too bad for Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Agents of Abhorrence because I won’t be the only one gunning for Brain Children moving from side project to centre stage.
