Super Wild Horses’ skeletal garage-pop is music designed for sh*tting all over your ex-boyfriend, girlfriend or any ex for that matter; friend, barista, masseuse, beautician, doctor, crush. While on this line of thought I can only describe Fifteen as a raucous Friday night out that expunges the demons of ex’s past.
Firmly rooted in the genealogy of Eddy Current Suppression Ring via simplified guitar and drum combinations, SWH’s lyrical content are planted in a teenage retrospect of lust, want and heartbreak. There is a trio of songs about falling in and out of love by way of ‘Adrian’ (“Adrian Bailey/Don’t keep me waiting”), ‘Golden Town’, and the aptly titled ‘Love’. A particular standout for me is the bittersweet guitar jangler ‘Degrassi’.
On a side note this album is also a testament to the versatility of Mikey Young’s production technique. He uses the dry, bare bones of a recording to make these pop songs ring clear. So go forth, let Fifteen rattle your eardrums. Relive the filthy ex-teenager in you.
